What’s the UK’s Most Expensive Plate?

The current record for the most expensive registration plate in Britain was “25 O”. This registration mark sold for a record breaking £518,000, it was sold to a Bradford businessman in 2014 to compliment his classic Ferrari 250 GT California. This sale was a huge exception and is by far the most expensive plate in the decade Between 2005 and 2009, the DVLA had a fire sale of what it called its “crown jewels” – rare plates on its records that it believed would go for a lot of money). Most private number plates sell for a lot less money, with prices starting at £250 all the way up to tens of thousands.

What Private Number Plates Can I Have?

On the 1st September 2001, DVLA released guidelines that all new number plates must display the new standard font. This is supposed to make number plates clearer and easier to remember. Number plates fitted before 1st September 2001 need not be replaced, provided the characters used are similar to the new font. Characters on a number plate can be 3D if they’re of the mandatory font. These rules just make sure that all number plates look the same and are easy to read. Any accredited reg plate supplier will make sure to abide by these regulations.

Eligibility

There are also some rules which prohibit the following:

  • Assign a number starting with ‘Q’ or ‘NIQ’
  • Put a private number on a ‘Q’ registered vehicle
  • Use a private number that makes a vehicle look newer than it is — for example, an ’07’ registration number on a 2003 registered vehicle

If you stick to the standard format and avoid these few characters, you’ll be good to go with your private number plate.
